Teams are showing interest in Rangers center fielder Leody Taveras, according to the Dallas Morning News. With outfielders Evan Carter, Adolis García, and Wyatt Langford in the mix, Texas has options for center field.
The Guardians and Rays could benefit from Taveras's defensive skills. Trading him and his $4.75 million salary would help Texas stay under the $241 million competitive balance tax threshold. Cot's Baseball Contracts estimates the Rangers' 2025 CBT payroll at $234.5 million, so they'll need some wiggle room for injury call-ups and trade deadline moves.
Veteran slugger J.D. Martinez is looking to play in 2025, according to the New York Post. At 37, Martinez is now a full-time designated hitter, having played just 12 innings in the outfield over the past three years. This will limit his market, but he could be a good fit for the Padres, who currently lack an established DH.
Ranked as the 44th best free agent this offseason, Martinez signed with the Mets late last year and had a strong start to the season (.806 OPS in the first half) before fading in the second half (.623 OPS). He started only 14 of New York's final 25 games and five of their 13 postseason games.
Shohei Ohtani spoke with reporters at the #Dodgers FanFest event today, giving an update on his return to the mound. After undergoing UCL surgery in September 2023 and a follow-up arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, Ohtani shared that his rehab has been "pretty smooth" and everything is proceeding "on schedule."
Longtime shortstop Xander Bogaerts started the 2024 season as the #Padres’ everyday second baseman but moved back to shortstop in September after Ha-Seong Kim’s season-ending shoulder injury. With Kim now poised to join the #Rays, Bogaerts is set to return to his old position.
Padres manager Mike Shildt announced that Bogaerts will be the team’s regular shortstop in 2025 and that the veteran is “excited” about the opportunity.
The #Yankees are on the hunt for infield help and have shown interest in Enrique Hernandez and Yoan Moncada, according to sources. While the team requested Moncada’s medicals early in the offseason, a source indicates that the Yankees have not re-engaged on the former White Sox third baseman.
Luis Castillo's name has been a hot topic in trade rumors this offseason, as he's the priciest member of the Mariners’ rotation. However, according to sources, a Castillo trade is now less likely than it was earlier in the winter. While the #Mariners will continue to explore other possibilities to build their roster, they seem to be moving away from trading Castillo.
The Orlando #Dreamers have announced that Hall of Famer Barry Larkin has joined their organization as an MLB ambassador. Larkin, who now resides in Orlando, is committed to bringing an MLB franchise to the city. The late Pat Williams, a former executive for the NBA’s Orlando #Magic, co-founded the Dreamers in 2019 with this goal in mind. Despite Williams’ passing last summer, the organization continues its mission to secure an #MLB team for Orlando. Larkin shared his excitement, stating, “Orlando has the most compelling market in the country to be the next MLB franchise location. At this stage in my career, nothing could be more exciting than being a key part of this effort.”
