In a significant boost for the University of North Carolina football and lacrosse programs, coach Bill Belichick has secured the commitment of quarterback Gary Merrill, a five-star recruit who excels in both sports. Merrill announced his decision on Wednesday night through a post on X, expressing his excitement about joining the Tar Heels as a two-sport athlete.
"UNC Football and Lacrosse," Merrill wrote. "Extremely grateful for the opportunity to play football and lacrosse at the University of North Carolina. Go Heels! Ready to get to work." Merrill has been a standout athlete at Saint Anthony's High School in South Huntington, N.Y. In his senior year, he showcased his versatility by throwing for 1,762 yards and 19 touchdowns as a quarterback, while also rushing for 1,955 yards and 32 scores. His impressive performance earned him the title of New York's Gatorade Player of the Year at QB. Additionally, Merrill is a top-ranked midfielder in lacrosse, further highlighting his athletic prowess. Since taking over as the Tar Heels' head coach on December 12, Belichick has been actively recruiting and strengthening the roster. Between new recruits and transfers, the eight-time Super Bowl champion has successfully added 21 student-athletes to the program in just over a month, as announced by the school earlier in January.
