In an exciting development for women's sports, Denver has been officially announced as the 16th team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and will begin play in 2026. This marks the first time a women's professional sports team in a top-level national league will call the Mile High City home.
The ownership group is led by Rob Cohen, the chairman and CEO of IMA Financial Group, who will serve as the controlling owner. Cohen has a long history of involvement in sports endeavors in the Denver area, including founding the Denver Sports Commission in 2001 and serving as a board member of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Foundation. Joining Cohen is Project Level, a subsidiary of Ariel Investments dedicated to leveling the playing field in terms of investment in women's sports. The group is spearheaded by chairwoman Mellody Hobson and former Washington Commanders president Jason Wright. Hobson will take on the role of the organization's alternate governor. Additional investors include FirstTracks Sports Ventures LLC (FTSV)—led by siblings Jon-Erik Borgen and Kaia Borgen Moritz, Neelima Joshi, and Dhiren Jhaveri—as well as Molly Coors.
