The Miami Dolphins have added a seasoned professional to their coaching staff, hiring Craig Aukerman as their new special teams coordinator on Wednesday.
Aukerman brings a wealth of experience to the Dolphins, having spent the past season as a special teams assistant with the Rams. During his time there, the Rams clinched the NFC West title and advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs. Prior to his stint with the Rams, Aukerman spent seven seasons with the Tennessee Titans, where he served as special teams coordinator from 2019 to 2023 and as a special teams assistant from 2017 to 2018. Throughout his coaching career, Aukerman has mentored several standout players, including two Pro Bowlers: punter Brett Kern (2017-19) and long snapper Morgan Cox (2022). Kern led the NFL in both net punting average (44.6 yards) and gross punting average (49.7 yards) in 2017 under Aukerman's guidance. However, Aukerman's tenure with the Titans came to an abrupt end during the 2023 season following a disastrous game in which the team had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown. Additionally, punter Ryan Stonehouse suffered a season-ending leg injury on his next punt attempt, leading to Aukerman's dismissal.
