The Pittsburgh Steelers are making a bold move this offseason as owner and president Art Rooney II has expressed a clear priority: securing a top-tier quarterback. Rooney has made it known that his "preference" is to sign either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson.
During a recent press conference, Rooney discussed the team's quarterback situation, indicating that it's "unlikely" both current quarterbacks would return for the next season. "I wouldn't close the door, but I'd say it's probably unlikely," Rooney stated. "I think both of them see themselves as starters, and I don't know that they want to share the same job again next year. So, I would say most likely we probably don't wind up bringing them both back." Rooney emphasized the importance of having a capable quarterback leading the team. "They're both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them," Rooney said. "So that'll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward." In addition to securing a quarterback, Rooney acknowledged the need to fill other positions within the quarterback room. He hinted at the possibility of looking to the draft to address these needs. "We've got a whole quarterback room to fill, and so there's jobs open in there. I wouldn't be surprised if we look in the draft as well either this year or next, and so that's got to be the priority."
