Miami Heat point guard Terry Rozier is currently under federal investigation as part of a broader probe into a sports gambling ring, according to The Wall Street Journal. The investigation centers around a game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans on March 23, 2023, which saw unusual betting activity related to prop bets against Rozier's statistics.
Authorities believe that individuals involved in the Jontay Porter betting scandal may have had inside information that led them to bet against Rozier. In that game, Rozier played only nine minutes and 34 seconds, finishing with five points, four rebounds, and two assists1. He was not listed on the injury report before the game but did not play again for the Hornets during the 2022-23 season afterward. When he left the game, the Hornets reported he was doubtful to return due to right foot discomfort, and he was listed with that injury for the rest of the season. Rozier has not been charged with any crime or accused of wrongdoing. The NBA was informed of the unusual betting activity at the time and conducted an investigation but found no violations of its rules. "In March 2023, the NBA was alerted to unusual betting activity related to Terry Rozier's performance in a game between Charlotte and New Orleans," NBA spokesman Mike Bass said. "The league conducted an investigation and did not find a violation of NBA rules. We are now aware of an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York related to this matter and have been cooperating with that investigation." Rozier, who was traded to the Miami Heat last January, has played 41 games for the team this season. He has declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
